The Utstein Meeting: Advancing the Future of XR in Healthcare Education

In November 2024, global experts gathered in Copenhagen for the transformative Utstein Meeting, a joint initiative by SESAM, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), and CAMES. This collaborative event explored the potential of Extended Reality (XR) to revolutionise healthcare education and enhance patient safety.

Discussions tackled critical topics, including designing evidence-based XR programs, overcoming adoption barriers, and building faculty capacity. The outcomes of this meeting have set a clear path forward, with agreed outputs including:

  • A paper summarising the process and outcomes of the meeting.
  • A research roadmap outlining a future agenda based on summit discussions.
  • Collaborative networks among participants to foster multi-institutional research projects.
  • Clear action items and responsibilities for advancing XR research in healthcare education.

Copenhagen was the perfect backdrop for this milestone event, celebrating 30 years of SESAM. In 1994, a group of European pioneers in medical simulation gathered in Copenhagen, marking the beginning of SESAM. The meeting concluded at Herlev Hospital, where one of SESAM’s founders, Professor Emeritus at University of Copenhagen Doris Østergaard, was honoured as a Distinguished Leader and received the first SESAM Star Award. ๐ŸŒŸ

The Distinguished Leader of SESAM recognition celebrates individuals who exemplify SESAM’s values of leadership, collaboration, and excellence in advancing simulation-based education and research. Doris Østergaard has played an instrumental role in shaping the organisation, mentoring the next generation of simulation leaders, and contributing to innovative approaches that enhance healthcare education and patient safety. Her unwavering dedication to SESAM’s mission made her a fitting recipient of this inaugural award.

This meeting was more than a celebration of SESAM’s origins—it was a launchpad for innovation and global collaboration. The connections made and ideas shared will continue to inspire initiatives that reshape learning, accessibility, and patient safety in health professions education.

Stay tuned for updates as we advance this exciting work together!

SESAM at SIMex 2024

SIMex 2024 in Mexico City brought together outstanding speakers and engaging content, all focused on the critical role of clinical simulation in transforming healthcare systems. It was an honour to represent SESAM at this exceptional event alongside our Scientific Committee Chair, Cristina Díaz Navarro. Together, we actively contributed to six different activities, including plenary sessions, workshops, and roundtable discussions.

The event highlighted the global importance of collaboration and was a wonderful opportunity to connect with representatives from INACSL, SIMGHOSTS, and SSH. A heartfelt gracias to the organisers for fostering such a collaborative and inspiring environment.

¡Viva México! ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ

President's Reflections on IMSH 2025

Attending IMSH 2025 in Orlando as the President of SESAM was an absolute honour and privilege. This incredible annual event, hosted by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), provided an outstanding platform to strengthen SESAM's collaboration with SSH and forge closer ties with other leading international simulation societies. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿค

A key highlight for me was seeing the Global Consensus Statement on Simulation-based Practice in Healthcare take centre stage once again. Co-lead by SESAM and SSH, this initiative has been instrumental in shaping the future of simulation-based practice. It’s exciting to see momentum building as we actively work on phase two to advance this important work. ๐Ÿš€

One of my proudest moments was celebrating Cristina Diaz-Navarro, SESAM’s Scientific Committee Chair, who received the prestigious SSH Presidential Citation. This well-deserved recognition highlights her outstanding leadership and collaboration in unifying the global healthcare simulation community. Cristina’s contributions, including her pivotal role in the creation of the Global Consensus Statement on Simulation-Based Practice, have provided a shared understanding and coordinated approach to leveraging simulation for improved educational outcomes and enhanced patient care worldwide. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ†

IMSH 2025 reaffirmed the importance of bringing European perspectives to the global stage and ensuring our shared vision and challenges are addressed collaboratively. I left Orlando inspired and energised by the dedication and expertise of so many professionals and partners.

A heartfelt thank you to all of the simulation community who made this event so memorable. Together, we are making an incredible impact on the future of simulation in healthcare. ๐Ÿ’กโœจ

Warm regards,

Pier Luigi

President SESAM

This year at IMSH 2025, SESAM’s current and past presidents were honoured for their outstanding contributions to advancing simulation and experiential learning, receiving the prestigious Medal of Presidential Recognition of Service, pictured here with incoming SSH President Jared Kutzin ๐ŸŒŸ
